Software in Textile Industry

The textile industry is one of the most important and oldest industries of the world. The term textile refers to woven fabric. The raw materials for textiles are obtained from plants and animals. Plant products such as cotton, jute and flax, and animal products such as wool and silk, provide us with natural fibres. Synthetic fibres such as rayon, nylon and polyester, have become increasingly popular. Cotton is the most popular fibre. The industrial revolution brought about a dramatic change in the textile industry. Important inventions as that of the flying shuttle (1733), carding machine (1748) and spinning mule (1779) introduced rapid developments in the cotton textile industry. The power loom came into use which helped the production process. Today, there are 3 types of mills —— spinning mills (produce yarn), weaving mills (produce cloth) and composite mills (produce yarn and cloth). Cotton textiles are mainly manufactured in the USA, the UK, China, Russia, Japan, India, etc. In India, cotton textile mills are mainly located in the cotton producing states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Kanpur, Kolkata, and Delhi are other centres of this industry. The first cotton textile mill was set up in Mumbai in 1854. Also, Mumbai is the largest centre cotton textile production and is, thus, known as the Cottonopolis of India. In context with the market size, it was estimated to US$ 150 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach US$ 250 billion in 2019 in India.

The textile industry usually deals with designing and manufacturing cloth and sometimes even selling it. With the advancement of technology in the past years, the textile industry is incorporating numerous methods of updated technology. These days, textile industries are using advanced software called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or textile ERP or ERP for textiles. This software (ERP) for textile industry can be helpful in many ways such as, planning, development, manufacturing, distribution as well as selling the textiles. This software are also available on cloud called cloud ERP that keeps an updated record of the investments and profits of the industry. An ERP software can be used by smaller as well as larger textile industries. This software can be edited according to the needs of the industry which is a major advantage of using ERP. It can operate on different levels, from the generation of payrolls to financial and legal matters. An ERP software is a one in all solution to any textile industry.

Benefits of using a software in a textile industry are:

  • Streamlined Manufacturing Facilities
  • Easy Handling of Payments and Receipts
  • Merchandise Inventory Management
  • Improved Collaboration and Networking
  • Mobile Data Access & Security
  • Management of Supplier and Customer Queries
  • Personalized Data Handling Platform

The Indian government agencies have come up with numerous export promotion policies for the textile industries. It has also allowed 100 per cent FDI in the Indian textiles sector under the automatic route.

By saying Make in India, we are not only inviting companies for cost-effective manufacturing, but also giving them an opportunity of a large market for their products.
