Global Technology News:

1. Jio Glass  – a quick glimpse: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) during its 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) showcased a new Mixed Reality solution, called Jio Glass. At the event, the company did not reveal the pricing and the availability details about the product. However, they did showcase a demo as to how the Jio Glass will work when it is made available to the public.RIL has stated that the new Jio Glass is designed for teachers and students to enable 3D virtual rooms and conduct holographic classes via the Jio Mixed Reality service in real-time. Apart from this, they can also be used to perform virtual meetings.”

Jio Glass

Jio Glass is at the cutting edge of technology that provides best-in-class Mixed Reality services to give users a truly meaningful immersive experience,” said Kiran Thomas, President, Reliance Industries Limited during the keynote. To recall, during RIL AGM 2019, Jio showcased a HoloBoard Mixed Reality Headset, which had similar functionalities. The Jio Glass seems to be the follow up to that project. The Jio Glass will weigh 75 grams and will need to be connected to a smartphone with a cable to power it. The company has said that it will come with 25 in-built apps to allow augmented reality video meetings and more.

2. High-tech firms can eliminate uncertainties in agriculture with IoT: A small but increasing number of agrarians are employing technology to take the guesswork out of their profession. Sangarmesh Talikotti, a 40-year-old farmer knows that he has to use a mix of the traditional knowledge acquired over the years and modern methods to minimise the risks he faces every season. So when he heard about deploying the internet of things IoT technology in farming, Talikotti did not hesitate. In March, he spent Rs 38,000 to plant three sensors on his 2.5-acre tomato farm.

The artificial intelligence-driven platform from Bangalore-based agri-tech startup Fasal regularly relays information to Talikotti’s smartphone. He gets updates on when to irrigate the field, when to reap the crops, what is the risk of pest attack and where to use pesticides.Talikotti is so impressed with the system that he now intends to install sensors across his 60-acre farm where he grows papayas, brinjals and drumsticks. He is especially happy that his fate is not entirely based on the variables anymore, all thanks to Fasal.

Founder’s Note:

Dear Patron,

It is ironic how, every morning we wake up to a world of uncertainty, worrying about the state of our businesses and the health of our loved ones. Since the last 90 days, as each day passes by, our COVID journals speak more of our fear and less of reality.

While the Government is gradually opening the economy, the psychological fear that the term ‘lockdown’ creates and builds up a negativity which stops the consumer from spending. It is a cycle that has affected tremendously, in all levels from domestic help, factory labourers to the salaried professionals and self-employed entrepreneurs.

Government is looking at postponing the lifting of the nationwide lockdown as the fear of spreading the disease still persists and the epidemic is not going to go away soon. All predictions of flattening the curve are being pushed back periodically.

However, keeping our faith and hopes high, we need to curb the psychological impact of lockdown to a minimum. Counting our current resources, we all should learn how to cope with the precautionary measures suggested by the Government healthcare department. It is best if one could continue working remotely with available digital tools and step out only if it’s necessary. Businesses that were relatively ready and have the best technological tools are suffering less from the crisis. Going online is the best way to maintain social distancing while ensuring not to stagnate your business.

Let us all aspire to overcome the psychological impact of the lockdown and salvage productivity at the same time.

Stay Healthy and Safe!

Gradual opening of lockdown and its impact on industries.

“During trying times one will have only 2 options – either shatter or get better.”

It’s about 4 months back, that we had started hearing news of the flu-like pandemic that has hit a part of the world and today, more than 4 billion humans at most corners of the world are some way or the other affected by this virus namely Covid-19. It has changed the norms of the entire world and prepared us all to survive with the ‘new normal’. The lockdown has been lifted partially, but the threat remains heightened.

Experts are of the view that the economic fallout of the Covid-19 will haunt Indian manufacturing space for a long time to come. Among India Inc, it’s the MSME sector where the bulk of employment and manufacturing takes place. This segment depends heavily on migrant workforce. Luring back these workforce from their natives is a task next to impossible. Workers’ exodus has come as a double whammy to many COVID-hit Indian sectors that were already whining under a slowing economy. For example, the country’s textile and apparel sector, which accounts for 10% of the country’s manufacturing production, 5% of the country’s GDP, and 13% of its export earnings. This is the segment that saw a large scale exodus of workers from its various manufacturing hotspots such as Delhi-NCR, Tirupur, Surat, Ludhiana, among others.

These steps include:

  • A detailed planning activity, where we need to identify which employees really need to come to work, when the lockdown is lifted. Others can continue to work from home. This segregation is important.
  • Companies should ensure transportation for their workers. At the offices there should be a series of checkpoints testing can be done. There should be holding areas for colleagues to ensure that a red flag can be raised if someone’s feeling unwell.
  • We have to ensure there is no crowding in our office spaces, ensure that only 25 or 50% of the workspace is actually occupied.
  • A similar set of actions need to be done with our support stuff including security guards, receptionists, cafeteria staff. We should delegate shifts and avoid all of them to come into work in the beginning or come in a staggered manner.
  • Regular sanitisation of office/ factory space needs to be regulated along with sanitiser dispensers provided at each step to keep oneself clean at all times.
  • All workers need to be well geared with the PPE( masks, face shields, gloves etc)
  • Regular health checkups to be carried out by the company by hiring professionals to avoid any asymptomatic patients.

At such unprecedented times it is best to ensure work productivity from the safety of your homes. Working remotely is possible only when your company is equipped with the right digital tools to manage it completely online. Adhering to a best fit ERP cloud software is the right decision to take in such trying times.

The benefits you will derive are many. To name just a few are:

  • It will help you curb unnecessary costs yet provide you with necessary data to continue your business processes remotely.
  • It helps in forecasting and analysing where your company lies after a certain period of time. It can calculate pros and cons and evaluate the company’s accounts and finance along with inventory.
  • Challenging times need technology to support and drive optimum ROI.

Besides,as the famous Martin Luther King has said “Only in the darkness can you see the stars”! It is only hope and our faith that will sustain and prevail during these difficult times.

Global News on technology:

1. E-commerce products to wear their origin on their sleeve

India may soon make it compulsory for eCommerce companies to display clearly whether a product being sold on their platform is made in the country or not, as the government seeks to curb Chinese imports. The clause is likely to be a part of the eCommerce policy that the commerce and industry ministry is drafting. “We will mandate eCommerce players to display whether a product is made in India or not. We are actively looking to enable that. This will help cut out Chinese goods,” said an official aware of the matter. China had a trade surplus of about $47 billion with India in the first 11 months of the fiscal year ended on March 31, 2020. Experts said the move to have clearly labelled goods on e-marketplaces was a positive one and would support Atmanirbhar mission, besides giving consumers the option of buying locally made products upfront.

2. Zoho has asked its employees to be in WFH mode till the pandemic subsides, without fixing a date of return to office.

With no flattening of the curve insight, companies that offer software as a service including Freshworks and Chargebee — are asking employees to work from home.

Zoho has also asked its employees to be in WFH mode till the pandemic subsides, without fixing a date of return to office. Consequently, some of the office leases have been cancelled.

Nasscom estimates show that the Indian IT/BPM industry has a total workforce of 4.36 million, and nearly 95% of them moved to WFH mode as soon as the government announced a lockdown during the last week of March. Jack Dorsey’s Twitter and Square have both said employees can work from home forever, Google and Facebook have told employees they can be in WFH mode until the end of 2020.

Dear Patron,

Over the past couple of months, organisations nationwide have found themselves in an unprecedented situation. Without prior warning they had to transition their teams to working from home. Due to this 50 days plus lockdown the nation is undergoing a huge socio economic turmoil. As we near the end of the ‘tunnel’ we all need to take measures to restore our businesses and resurrect our finances with diligence and faith.

No matter what industry you’re in, transitioning your employees to working remotely with ease and efficiency requires the right set of infrastructure and appropriate software tools. Team members need to be able to coherently participate in online meetings, engage in collaborative activities and access relevant documents and files along with considering security and compliance. All the team members with the use of effective ERP tools can collaborate and stay in touch from a distance ensuring that they are able to move forward with important projects even under these challenging situations.

Your team members can navigate directly from your organisation’s intranet page to their department’s secure SharePoint page. Here they can access important documents, review their departmental calendar, read news updates and more. Gone are the days of sharing files and updates via group emails. Instead team members can post news updates directly. It’s easy to populate these updates with important data updates with a best fit ERP software on a cloud platform.

Our goal is to support the MSME industries to emerge better from today’s unprecedented situation. It’s time to bring change and adopt transition. Evaluate how you are  doing business and to understand what is available to help you perform better in future to stay relevant in the competitive market.

“ We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

-Martin Luther King Jr.

With hope, patience and perseverance we shall all overcome this crisis time. It’s a Global emergency. Our Government is trying all measures to bring justice to all industries suffering losses during this period. Before the end of the lockdown, PM Modi had declared a Rs. 20 lakh Crores packageequivalent to 10% of India’s GDP. To build an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ all these fiscal and monetary measures will help restart an economy battered by the over 50-day shutdown of industries. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has addressed the media to share details of the massive package.

Some of the relief measures  taken towards the growth of MSMEs are:

  1. Sources said the April-June wages of employees of MSMEs will be paid from the Employee State Insurance Corporation.
  2. The employee insurance funding or ESIC is a self-financing health insurance scheme under the government that is mandatory for employees earning up to Rs 21,000 rupees a month. The ESIC funds, which have Rs 31,000 crore at present, offer compensation in the form of cash up to three months of unemployment.
  3. The government will also pay the employees’ share of provident fund for those in the MSME sector who draw up to Rs 30,000 a month. The limit is currently Rs 15,000. This will cost the government an additional Rs 5,000 crore, say officials.
  4. A one-year moratorium on loan repayment for MSMEs will also be one of the proposals being considered.
  5. Small firms will be eligible to borrow an additional 20% of their credit limit.
  6. The government will also help small and medium industries in loans by paying a share of the interest or having the loan restructured.
  7. Small businesses have been the worst hit by the lockdown with their activity coming to a halt. Some 10 crore workers in mining, construction, manufacturing and services sectors have been left jobless due to the lockdown, according to various reports.
  8. Hundreds of thousands of cash-starved small businesses have either deferred or cut their workers’ wages this month, say industrialists and union leaders. The All India Manufacturers Organisation (AIMO)- an industry body representing some 100,000 small manufacturers – said last month that more than two-thirds of its members faced problems in paying salaries.
  9. Several states had written to the government to allow the use of funds collected under the employee state insurance funds to cover wages or at least a part of it for the lockdown period.
  10. MSMSe are small and medium-sized businesses with investment  in equipment not exceeding Rs 10 crores. Small businesses account for nearly a quarter of India’s $2.9 trillion economy and employ more than 50 crore workers, according to government estimates.

The government is eager to ensure that the small businesses are given enough financial space to survive the lockdown and get back to work once it is lifted. With all these proactive measures taken by our Government we are sure that your MSME will soon be resurrected and overcome all the losses faced during this period.

Team Expand has also taken a step towards supporting your business by reducing the user charges for a limited period along with other user friendly benefits. Global news on technology:

1. Mobile Web, cloud to attract tech spending

The next wave of technology spending is expected to flow toward gadgets and software that help people access the Internet from any location, and interact online in more innovative ways. While the global economic downturn has forced companies to cut back on spending and favor technology like “cloud computing” that helps save costs, executives at the Reuters Global Technology Summit forecast growth in new wireless and online arenas. Ralph de la Vega, head of mobility and consumer business at AT&T Inc (T.N), said he expects a wider range of devices, from digital cameras to automobiles, to offer direct Internet access and smarter social networking capabilities. “Just about everything you touch will have the capability to be connected and to talk to other machines and other devices, in the next generation of wireless growth that is in front of us,” he said. Well-known venture capitalist Tim Draper said he was enthusiastic about companies, which have developed widgets to help Internet users share online tidbits with friends through sites like Facebook and MySpace.

2. Facial recognition firms are scrambling to see around face masks

Because of face coverings prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, companies are trying to ID people based on just their eyes and cheekbones. In the age of the coronavirus, face masks have become a part of normal life. They’re a safety requirement in many places, and for some people, a fashion statement. But for facial recognition technology, they pose a major challenge. Governments in more than half the World are making masks mandatory in various public settings. But don a mask and stare at your iPhone or Android device to unlock it, and you quickly see the problem for facial recognition. Before the novel coronavirus hit, facial recognition providers were expecting to install their technology everywhere: in airports, casinos, restaurants and schools. Face masks threaten to change all that, but the industry is looking at the situation more as a speed bump than a roadblock.
Some companies assert that their technology isn’t affected by masks, and that artificial intelligence can still detect and identify people with a high accuracy rate, even when half the face is covered.
A public beta program for Apple’s latest iOS release showed that the tech giant is updating its Face ID to account for people wearing masks. Google didn’t respond to a request for comment on whether it’s doing the same with Android.

Dear Patron,

Today the world is standing in such an ambiguous situation that all of us are certain only about the ‘uncertainty’ ahead. All pre-planned goals and deadlines, aspirations and dreams are taking a back seat on the business front. The primary priority of all is to stay safe and protect ourselves and the rest of the world from the further spread of the fatal pandemic that has haunted the entire world in these last 4 months.

However, it’s how we cope in such crisis times that depicts our true nature and state of mind. Those of us who survive this turmoil with sanity, balance, patience, endurance and above all faith will come out victorious in the new world that awaits us. The human race is conflicted with a mixture of myriad emotions. Perseverance will show us light at the other end of the tunnel. All we need to do is stay healthy and safe at our own homes and prepare ourselves to manage the backlog that has occurred during this lockdown.

There are several positive ways to work from home productively. Our choices often show us the path to our goals. We need to choose the right way to work and also update ourselves with changing times. The use of cutting edge technology comes as a saviour here with smart watches, smartphones, Apps like Zoom, google duo, Google mini and softwares like Enterprise resource planning.

I sincerely pray for the well being of you and your loved ones and hope you keep your spirits high and aspirations higher. Your feedback will help us know your queries and challenges better. Please leave a comment below so that we can get to your service promptly.

Manage your business from the safety of your home.

Finding it difficult to stay calm and patient during this lockdown? Are you unsure of how to manage the backlog of your business and recover the losses?

Distance yourself from people and society not from your work. Expand ERP software will help you in more ways than one to keep your business ongoing even under a national lockdown.
However, in isolation you just lose the company, not the purpose. Staying sane and calm at this hour needs to be the right approach to sail through such a time of a socio economic turndown. The looming question here in every entrepreneur’s mind is, how to protect my business? The turning point here is how future ready is your business to carry on in spite of such trying times.

Expand ERP on the cloud is the best possible solution to do business while maintaining social distance. With Expand Erp all your business processes are on screen 24X7. So you can easily work from home and stay safe for yourself and the well being of your family and society.
The ongoing policy challenge is to persuade all citizens to act responsibly and to appreciate the possible impacts of their everyday actions upon others. Thus, during the Covid -19 pandemic, the status quo must alter. There will be two outcomes should people not alter their behavior – more death and the intensification of the coercion-based approach.

To work remotely there are a few protocols which if followed churns out more fruitful results:

  1. Stay calm – Try and remain calm at all times. Do whatever it takes to create a warm environment with positivity and hope.
  2. Build a stress free zone – Look for a break room, need not be a fancy setting, but away from the room where you sleep. All you need is some soft lighting, something comfortable to sit on, your technology device (laptop, pc, iPad etc with internet ).
  3. Get up -Try not to lean backwards or lie down and work. It shows less results.
  4. Get ready – Wake up and get ready almost as if you are going to the office. If you stay in your slippers you are less likely to be productive.
  5. Create routines and time lines  – Work when you are at your most productive. If you have a to do list to follow, you won’t waste time pondering on what to do and how to do. Saving time this saving money.Save your harder tasks for when you know you will be at your right headspace and the easier ones on slower points of the day.
  6. Focus on one distraction – a baby maybe – The busier you are the more productive you will get and the least chances you will have to fall into depression. If you have a child to look after at home, working while she naps or is getting herself entertained is the best option to get productive work done.
  7. Stay Connected – Keep a team chatroom open. There is nothing more important in a group remote project than casual communication. Not just official emails and work updates, but the ability to brainstorm in a conference video call. Making optimal usage of cutting edge technology like Whatsapp group chat, Zoom, Google duo, Skype etc.
  8. Design a playlist that matches your tasks – you can listen to music that matches the diversity of your work and keep yourself relaxed and calm.
  9. Communicate expectations with whoever you are sharing your house with – Ensure space from your housemate (parents, siblings, spouses, children) during your work hours.
  10. Pick a definitive deadline to finish a work each day – Instead of losing track of time, it’s best to set an alarm for the end of the day so you know that you can wind up for the day and prepare to start off the next day.

Finally, the most efficient and productive technology that needs to be used is a perfectly fit cloud ERP software that interconnects a multitude of your business processes and integrates them on one single platform.

Luxor Impex is a fabrication company which imports fabrics from other countries.

Owing to its capacity, Luxor was having difficulty in tracking inventory and managing reports. It was required to make records of the inventory, roll wise and convert the flock or upholstery fabrics into various different names of products and record exact roll wise inventory. The raw stock comes in as rolls when imported, for example, 1000mts of Flock fabric segregated in 20 rolls of 50 mts each according to colour, type or design. Team Expand was able to successfully solve their problems by implementing ERP system and integrating their business seamlessly.

We humbly received a testimonial from the Director, Mr. Raj.

“Expand ERP has given data and helped us to make decisions on accurate information than on hunches.” Mr.Raj Khunteta, Director Finance.

Even during this lock down our purchase people were able to contact the farmers with whom contracts were made.. as the contact nos. were available in the ERP and we are in the middle of the harvest season. Also I was able to raise new purchase orders. Also during this lock down it was a good opportunity to discuss customization and was able to navigate through the different modules to deeply study the possibilities.”

CEO, Expand ERP

Why is it important to choose the right ERP for your business?

“If it fails to fit, it won’t succeed.”

An Enterprise Resource Planning software can work successfully only if it fits in the specific needs of your business while choosing the appropriate ERP. Knowing what suits best is extremely essential for a hassle-free and seamless user experience.

With Expand ERP, you can be stress-free as we understand your specific needs and tailor your ERP software.

Can we embrace the new?

A generic ERP software streamlines coherent workflow of any business like Purchase, Warehouse management, Sales, Production, project management, HRM, CRM, Finance etc. However every industry has their own specific fields which are unique to their vertical. Thus investing in a generic ERP software is useless and turns out to be more expensive. At our organisation, our technical team is trained to hear our customer’s business needs first and then curate a software dashboard that will fit best for his business.

Uncompromisingly, for Expand ERP, the best way to grow is to delight our current customer. That’s because happy customers are our most powerful promoters who drive referrals and repeat sales.

One such happy client story is of Mr. Lakshman Bimal Joukani, Director, Bellamoosh Lifestyle.

He says, “Expand ERP successfully implemented a completely customised ERP solution at our facility.”

Factors that show why we should customise ERP

  1. Meet your company’s unique needs – selects only the elements that are needed and not unnecessary piles on. If your business has complex accounting needs but isnt in manufacturing, you can tailor the selection of features to pay for only the tools you will use. With custom software each application can be integrated to work seamlessly with your vertical, eliminating the need to compromise functionality.
  2. Reduce unnecessary implementation and training cost– when purchasing a generic ERP system companies compare and evaluate different packages. Once they have determined they have to hire consultants with several engineers to install the modules. At the end of this process the company is ultimately tied to outdated software with limited functionality. On the contrary a well designed application in a custom ERP is intuitive enough to require no specialised training. You can also craft the tools that are best for your business. With custom ERP development you can know your costs ahead of time and pre plan for your businesses improvisation.
  3. The software grows along with your business– when your business has custom software you can upgrade when your business changes instead of when the ERP provider decides to. Sometimes ERP providers will offer third party add ons to improve functionality which requires additional license fee. While it’s tempting to alter code as needed it can nullify one of the few benefits if going with the big name. Instead with the custom software you can upgrade anytime or even keep what works well for your company. Expand ERP has partnered with features like Amazon, Flipkart, Shopify, Blue Dart, Whatsapp, Magento for making your user experience simpler.

Global trends in technology in 2020:

1. Computer Vision

In Technological terms, “vision” involves systems that are able to identify items, places, objects or people from visual images – those collected by a camera or sensor. It’s this technology that allows your smartphone camera to recognize which part of the image it’s capturing is a face, and powers technology such as Google Image Search. As we step into 2020, we’re going to see computer vision equipped tools and technology rolled out for an ever-increasing number of uses. It’s fundamental to the way autonomous cars will “see” and navigate their way around danger. Production lines will employ computer vision cameras to watch for defective products or equipment failures, and security cameras will be able to alert us to anything out of the ordinary, without requiring 24/7 monitoring. Computer vision is also enabling face recognition, which we will hear a lot about in 2020.

2. Extended Reality

Extended Reality (XR) is a catch-all term that includes several new and emerging technologies being used to create more immersive digital experiences. More specifically, it refers to virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. Virtual reality (VR) provides a fully digitally immersive experience where you enter a computer-generated world using headsets that blend out the real world. Augmented reality (AR) overlays digital objects onto the real world via smartphone screens or displays (think Snapchat filters). Mixed reality (MR) is an extension of AR, that means users can interact with digital objects placed in the real world (think playing a holographic piano that you have placed into your room via an AR headset). From 2020 all this will change, as businesses get to grips with the wealth of exciting possibilities offered by both current forms of XR. Virtual and augmented reality will become increasingly prevalent for training and simulation, as well as offering new ways to interact with customers.
